On April 29, 2026, the EXCALIBUR project participated in the RSCY 2026 Conference in Paphos, Cyprus. Project partner ECOE, represented by Dr. Konstantinos Roussos and Mr. George Leventis, delivered a compelling presentation titled, “A Methodological Framework for Monitoring Burial Sites using Remote Sensing and Geostatistical Data Fusion Within the EXCALIBUR Project.”
Advancing Heritage Protection
Safeguarding historical burial sites from natural and anthropogenic threats requires innovative, non-destructive solutions. During the session, Dr. Roussos and Mr. Leventis showcased EXCALIBUR’s cutting-edge methodology, which combines Earth Observation (EO) satellite imagery with geostatistical data fusion. By applying advanced geostatistical data fusion techniques, this framework will create robust geospatial indicators that will act as a continuous early-warning system for vulnerable sites.
This approach serves as the foundation for a dedicated EXCALIBUR monitoring toolkit, which will be validated through the project’s pilot sites. By systematically assessing the threats to the site, the toolkit provides the necessary inputs for the future development of a Digital Twin, ultimately enabling informed decision-making and strengthening long-term preservation strategies.
